Shimanami Collective Programmes

The Shimanami Collective is a series of capacity-building and training programmes for the Asia-Pacific, run by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Division for Prosperity with the financial support of the Government and People of Japan.

It aims to build resilience against disasters and to enhance sea and human security by empowering youth and women in the Asia-Pacific region.

The programme seeks to strengthen capacity and foster collaboration in the Indo-Pacific to address critical security challenges affecting our oceans, including climate, environmental, economic, food, and maritime security.

The programme will teach participants how to effectively disseminate, monitor, analyse and respond to early warning systems for climate-related hazards and extreme weather events.

The programme aims to equip learners with lifelong skills to develop inclusive disaster risk reduction plans that reflect the needs of their communities and countries.

Inspiring leaders as catalyst for change

The Shimanami Collective consists of specialized training in three areas: Sea and Human Security, Early Warning Systems, and Women’s Leadership in Disaster Risk Reduction.

UNITAR first launched its Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme in 2016, with a focus on empowering and building the capacity of people living in disaster-prone areas. Building on the programme’s success, UNITAR now expands its contributions by incorporating under the Shimanami Collective two distinct, yet interrelated, programmes in 2024: Sea and Human Security, and Early Warning Systems.

Fostering regional collaboration across Asia-Pacific

The Shimanami, also known as the Shimanami Kaido ( しまなみ海道 ), is a scenic route in Japan that connects the main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, linking six small islands along the way. Shimanami symbolizes connectivity and integration of diverse cultures, ideas, and people. Through the Shimanami Collective, we aim to equip youth and women with the knowledge, skills, and network they need to build local resilience and foster regional collaboration in our changing world.
